St. Peter's Tells Centuries of Stories
For almost four centuries, Bermuda's first place of worship, St. Peter's Church, has overlooked the harbour from the top of its famous brick stairs rising from Duke of York Street in St. George's. First built by colonists in 1612, it is the oldest Protestant church in the New World. Visitors are awed by the sacred antiquity of this icon from settlement times.
St. Peter's reflects the resilience of Bermuda. It was rebuilt in stone after the original wooden building was destroyed by a hurricane in 1713. Extended several times in the 19th century, it provides an excellent example of how to blend 18th- and 19th-century Bermuda architecture.
Beneath exposed cedar beams lie many historic items, including the St. George's Chalice, given to the church in 1625 by the Bermuda Company, and a full set of silver, given by King William III in 1697. Other historical pieces include the oldest existing Bermuda furniture: the communion table made in 1620, the pulpit from 1660, the dole cupboard of 1640 and the bishop's throne from the 1700s.
In the shade of coconut palms, the western graveyard holds the remains of slaves and free blacks. Around the church are the tombs of many Bermudians and visitors who died here, including Midshipman Richard Dale, the last known American casualty of the War of 1812. In the eastern section are buried Gov. Sir Richard Sharples and his aide, Capt. Hugh R.L. Sayers, who were assassinated in 1973.
