Cut-Offs Go Classic

When in Bermuda, dress as the Bermudians do! Bermuda shorts are known as the national dress of the island. As you walk along its streets, it is just as common to see businessmen clad in Bermuda shorts — replete with jacket, shirt, tie and knee-high socks — as it is to see the shorts sported as stylish beachwear.

Bermuda shorts came into fashion at the turn of the 20th century, when British troops stationed in Bermuda decided to cut off their khaki trousers at the knee to withstand the heat and humidity. The heads of the British regiments soon recognised the need to revamp the uniforms, and the standard military "short khaki" was adopted.

Four centuries of history have broadened Bermudians' wardrobe options considerably, but the shorts persisted as a centrepiece of Bermudian style — a sartorial symbol of the islands' English heritage. Contemporary versions are made in materials ranging from linen to wool and in colours from pastel to vibrant to rich, thus accommodating any social circumstance or weather.

Women and children have long claimed Bermuda shorts as their own, and men wear them not only to the office but also as elegant attire for cocktail parties, weddings and other such occasions. Andrea Bell, menswear buyer for Gibbons Company, trains her staff to help men coordinate colours and put together just the right shorts-based outfit.

According to Bell, "The shorts must be two inches above the knee and should match at least one colour in the tie — a quintessential smart Bermudian look."
