Bermuda Music Festival

The Bermuda Music Festival 2010 will be held September 30 - October 2nd, 2010 and promises to be bigger and better -- when once again the stars will shine even brighter in Bermuda. This year's performers include Grammy award winner and son of the legendary Bob Marley — Ziggy Marley, the soulful talent of Angie Stone, hip-hop and R&B star Estelle and critically acclaimed, award winning singer-songwriter and actress Toni Braxton. Popular local talent joins the music festival too. Enjoy Homegrown, McCartney K and Friends plus the Chewstick Collective. It all happens at the gorgeous Fairmont Southampton on South Shore Road. Tickets on sale now at bdatix.com, or 441-232-2255 the iStore on 46 Reid Street in Hamilton, Fabulous Fashions in Heron Bay Plaza in Southampton.

From famous shipwrecks and steel pan to knee socks and cricket matches, Britain’s oldest colony sure knows how to throw a party. A Caribbean mélange of colonial history and African heritage, Bermuda is also host to one of the hottest music festivals under the tropical sun.

Since 1995 when it started as a jazz event, the Bermuda Music Festival has attracted a slew of luminaries, including Beyoncé, Smokey Robinson, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Seal. The year 2009 was historic, when not only did the festival salute 14 years on the island but also inaugurated a new venue, the Keep Yard at the National Museum of Bermuda, which celebrated its 200th anniversary and has been majestically resorted to its original splendour.

Hosted by the Department of Tourism and staged in October, Bermuda Music Festival 2009 was billed as “Quincy Jones and Friends,” and honoured the performer with the first-ever African Diaspora Heritage Trail award, presented by Premier and Tourism Minister Dr. Ewart Brown. “Let me say that this is a very special day to be able to welcome a man who is known everywhere in the world.”

Star-studded performances included those by singers extraordinaire Patti Austin and Erykah Badu, and social activist superstar Wyclef Jean. Six-time Grammy winner John Legend rocked the house, while R&B crooner Michael McDonald wowed fans with his soulful ballads.

Taking great pride in the island’s own, Bermudian singer Gita Blakeney-Saltus was chosen to serenade Quincy Jones in what she described as the “pinnacle of her career.”

No stranger to the music scene, Blakeney-Saltus also worked with the late Isaac Hayes and opened for Gladys Knight, Jonathan Butler and Angie Stone. “I have listened to Quincy’s music since I was a child,” she told fans. “It is the ultimate experience to work with him.”

Bermudian Chef Fred Ming can now add cooking for Quincy Jones to his impressive résumé. “It’s like cooking for the Queen of England,” the chef said, describing his menu of fish chowder, conch fritters and cassava pie.

“Bermuda’s natural beauty and world-class accommodations set the Bermuda Music Festival apart from the rest,” noted co-producer Rock Newman. “During the day visitors take advantage of championship golf, horseback riding, wreck diving, shopping and sightseeing, and by night are serenaded by some of the world’s most celebrated artists.”
