Create More Productive Space

By Michele Smith, OBM International

We are all creative, whether in visual arts, music, writing or organisational skills. That is, we could be creative if our offices — the spaces in which we spent most of our waking hours — encouraged our productivity.

In the 21st century, the sterile, grey, institutional office of the past is getting warmed up with colour, texture and "green" materials. Home offices are now considered seriously for their cost savings and environmental benefits.

According to the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco, "The most creative workplaces are those that have designed their space to reflect and support their workplace culture... Taking away physical barriers, or cultivating a beautiful art collection or increasing the height of a ceiling can be effective contributions to employee productivity."

Colour is a strong factor. People feel better when surrounded by organic tones, which encourage relaxation, whilst unnatural colours can raise blood pressure and stress level.

Studies show that when lighting is poor, headaches, eyestrain and fatigue can occur, depressing productivity. To avoid these losses, fluorescent lighting can be combined with incandescent and xenon lighting, dimmers, programmable zones and natural lighting.

Traditional corporate hierarchy often gives way to flexible environments, ease of movement, interpersonal communication and interaction between workers at multiple levels.

Architects and space planners can help as economic challenges compel companies to change. Space must be used to its full potential, and sophisticated storage, digital technology and standardised furnishings can respond easily to the demands of an evolving company.

As top performers consider what really matters — family, friends, personal goals — they take notice of their workspaces and ask, "Is this office really conducive to my needs and the needs of my employees?" Companies that pay attention earn greater productivity.
